Drone strikes on two markets in western Sudan leave 33 dead

On March 8 local time, a reporter from China Media Group learned from medical authorities in Western Kordofan State, Sudan, that two markets in the towns of Abu Zabad and Wad Banda were struck by drone attacks that day. The attacks have killed 33 civilians and injured several others; all casualties were local residents.

It is understood that the two markets targeted in the attack are key gathering places where local residents in West Kordofan State routinely purchase daily necessities. At the time of the incident, the markets were crowded with people, and the drone strikes directly resulted in heavy civilian casualties. As of now, no individual or armed group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and further details of the incident are still being verified.

This attack on civilian gathering areas occurred against the backdrop of an escalating armed conflict within Sudan. Recently, military confrontations between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), along with their ally the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N), have intensified across the three states under the jurisdiction of the Kordofan region. The frequency and intensity of clashes have risen significantly, with fighting continuously spilling into civilian areas. Attacks on civilian facilities and gathering places have occurred one after another, posing an extremely grave threat to the lives and basic survival of local civilians.
